Most have a variety of work but are recognized as espially good in one area or another. When someone talks about different markets and what they like, it is the best to listen intently and suck up as much information from your fellow models and bookers as possible.
Some markets are more commercial and some others are more editorial. By commercial, I mean for the money. Editorial is for beautiful pictures for your portfoilio and the exposure to others who buy fashion magazines. All the information about YOUR kind of market, that you work in, is good to know. So ask girls, especially experienced girls or ones wtih a similar look to yours who have been to other markets you havent been to.It is incredibly important your accountant is fimilar with the kind of international work you will be doing, so they can advise you on how you can go about your business and which receipts to collect.
Paris: Is an Editorial market. Girls go there for tear sheets, which are the pictures from magazines that they then put into their portfolios. A lot of editorials have 6 or 8 pages of fashion featuring so it is a major change to get good pictures for your portfolio and to work with people in the business who can recommend you for other jobs. Editorial is very important. It is especially good if the photographer is well known for great pictures or is currently hot. Shows are also very important for this market and can have a major effect on raising your profile as a model (Getting your face known). The shows are seasonal and your agency can tell you when the castings start. Day rates or the amount you get paid per day can be low for shows. If you are new or unknown, it can be a couple hundred Euros or less, depending on the magazine or the show.
Try to enjoy yourself and learn from the experience as Paris can really teach you a lifetime of lessons in a short period. But Paris is not always a money market!
Milan: is an Editorial market too.Shows are just important in Milan as Paris for a model, for all the same reasons. Only some of the most talented people are involved back stage in the shows and they do the shows all over the world,travelling in teams to NY and Paris, so it is an incredible opportunity to meet the really talented creative people behind the looks! There is also a lot of waiting time at shows so bring a book, your ipod or take the chance to meet other models or just meet a new, wonderful friend. Its easy to have a good time in Milan. Agencies work together with nightclubs, so clubbing, eating and drinking is for free!
Hamburg: Germany is a money market. German clients can be very disciplined and rigid. There is much less stress placed on social involvement but german clients will always expect to get what they paid for and they are known for their directness and professional attention to details. Don't be late and don't talk on the phone when you need to be on set. Germany has always had a healthy catalogue clientele, with several large catalogues production throughout the year. The advertising rates in Germany are not as high as in France and the model agencies will take 25% commisson fees.
New York:Well it is not called the big apple for nothing! This is a huge and diverse market, which can springboard your whole career! New York is the most important market for a model! Be sure you are strong, indepentend and fit for this market.Most agents will expect you to live in New York if you want to take a serious crack at the market. Be ready for this market, it is not the one to cut your teeth on!
London:Is one of the worlds most recognized and vibrant fashion centres. The work is diverse, the market competitive but incredibly creative, free and exciting. This is the perfect place to explore your own fashion style as people experiment without fear of feeling conspicuous. There is a large variety of work including shows. An important or inlfuential agent is a must if you want to make the most out of this market.
London,Paris,New York and Milan are the most important markets but there are many other great places to stay and work as a model for example Sydney, Tokio, Barcelona or Miami.
